Cookies Policy

Effective Date: January 1, 2026 · Last Updated: February 23, 2026

Summary: MV Dining Guide uses cookies set by third-party analytics services (Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager) to understand how visitors use the Site. We also use browser localStorage to save your on-site preferences. This policy explains what cookies are used, why, and how you can manage them.

1. What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files placed on your device by websites you visit. They are widely used to make websites work efficiently, provide analytics, and remember user preferences. Cookies can be "first-party" (set by the site you're visiting) or "third-party" (set by an external service).

2. Cookies We Use

The Site uses third-party cookies through our analytics and tag management services. Below is a summary of the cookies that may be set when you visit the Site:

Google Analytics Cookies

_gaDistinguishes unique users by assigning a randomly generated number as a client identifier. Used to calculate visitor, session, and campaign data for analytics reports.2 years
_ga_*Used by Google Analytics 4 to persist session state and track sessions.2 years

For more details, see Google Analytics Cookie Usage.

Google Tag Manager

Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a tag management system that deploys and manages analytics scripts. GTM itself does not set cookies that store personal data, but it facilitates the deployment of other tags (such as Google Analytics) that do use cookies as described above.

Other Third-Party Cookies

The following third-party services may also set cookies:

  • Google Fonts: May set cookies when font files are loaded. See Google's Cookie Policy.
  • Map tile providers: May set technical cookies for caching and load balancing when the interactive map is displayed.

We may also use additional third-party analytics, performance, or marketing tools from time to time that may set their own cookies. We will update this policy to reflect material changes.

3. What We Use Instead of Cookies: localStorage

In addition to cookies, we use your browser's localStorage API to remember your preferences. Unlike cookies, localStorage data is:

  • Never automatically sent to any server with HTTP requests
  • Stored only on your local device
  • Not accessible to third parties through our Site
  • Entirely under your control

Data We Store in localStorage

KeyPurposeExample Value
mvr_darkDark mode preferencetrue / false
mvr_favsYour favorite restaurants["Alchemy","Atria"]
mvr_viewPreferred view modegrid / list
mvr_recentRecently viewed restaurants["Alchemy","Atria"]

4. How to Manage Cookies & Storage

You have full control over cookies and locally stored data:

Opt Out of Google Analytics

You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. This add-on prevents Google Analytics JavaScript from sharing information about visit activity with Google Analytics.

Manage Cookies in Your Browser

  • Chrome: Settings → Privacy and Security → Cookies and other site data
  • Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
  • Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data
  • Edge: Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Cookies and site permissions

You can block all cookies, block only third-party cookies, or selectively delete specific cookies. Note that blocking all cookies may affect the functionality of some websites.

Clear localStorage

Clearing cookies through browser settings will typically also clear localStorage data. You can also clear localStorage independently through your browser's Developer Tools (Application → Local Storage). Clearing this data will reset your dark mode preference, favorite restaurants, recently viewed, and view mode to their defaults.

5. Do Not Track

We respect Do Not Track (DNT) browser signals. Where technically feasible, we configure our analytics tools to honor DNT signals. However, not all third-party analytics providers guarantee DNT compliance. For guaranteed opt-out, we recommend using the Google Analytics Opt-out Add-on described above.

6. Consent

By continuing to use the Site, you consent to our use of cookies and localStorage as described in this policy. If you do not consent, you may disable cookies in your browser settings and/or install the Google Analytics Opt-out Add-on. The Site will continue to function with limited cookies, though some analytics features will be disabled.

7. Updates to This Policy

If we change our cookie practices or introduce new tracking technologies, we will update this policy and the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. Material changes may be communicated through a notice on the Site.
